I was so obsessed with Nada Surf back in the heady days of 2002. WTMD’s been playing this song a lot lately, and the chorus is really calling to me: “Always love/Hate will get you every time.”
Tunes Tuesday: "A Little Soul," Pulp
I think confessionals don’t get more real than Jarvis Cocker intoning “I did what was wrong though I knew what was right” right before a fab guitar riff. Possibly the most beautiful song ever written about a deadbeat dad.
Tunes Tuesday: "Chevrolet Van," The Nude Party
This song really speaks to me. I’ve always joked we should retire when we’re young and work when we’re old, and sounds like these guys are doing just that.
Tunes Tuesday: "Rickety," Yo La Tengo
This song is so delicate, it feels like it could drift away on a stiff breeze. Maybe that’s what makes it so pretty. I love the whispered duet…and lyrics like this:
Nothing's gone and nothing lasts
The doors ajar and closing fast
Through it all, we're on our feet
But rickety
Tunes Tuesday: "Best Shirt On," Chuck Prophet
In self-quarantine, I’ve been wearing the same clothes everyday, like I’m a cartoon character. I used to marvel at my Grandpa, who only ever wore a navy blue work shirt, blue pants in the same shade, and blue suspenders. He had a few identical sets of each hanging up in his closet and that was it.
This Chuck Prophet song reminds me of his closet. Besides how catchy it is, I love the story behind the song too. And it reminds me that clothes really can make a difference and I really need to pick it up in the fashion department.
Tunes Tuesday: "I Feel Alive," TOPS & "Alive," Hanni El Khatib
Two Tunes Tuesday! I don’t know either of these artists well but I heard both these songs on WTMD and it was love. The theme here is pretty obvious. First up, a dreamy and very catchy 80s-esque chorus from Montreal band TOPS. Then the slinkiest little woodwind riff on Hanni El Khatib’s death-defying but make it dance-y new track.
