I've been obsessed with Robyn for a long time, and my trip to Sweden probably intensified things. Right after I got home from that trip, a Volvo commercial starring Robyn came out and I fell for it, hook and sinker. Like a sucker, probably. In the ad, Robyn drives through LA while her song with Röyksopp throbs in the background. She has a mullet, she wears platform sneakers to the grocery store, and she says things like, "I want to be a recyclable person." I've wanted a Volvo ever since.
Now I'm not a car person. I barely drive. I had a lot of trouble learning to drive in suburban Northern Virginia. There were several accidents/fender benders in my teens and early twenties (I may have hit one parent's car while driving another parent's car). I'm not proud of this at all, but driving really scares me at times. Now when I do drive, I try to be really, really careful.
Back in college, I remember being so excited about getting my first car. I needed a car for my internship, so my dad said he would help pay for the down payment and I could take the monthly payment. I did so much research on what car to buy, late at night on my parent's creaky old desktop computer in the basement, comparing car specs. In the end, we bought a Honda Civic. How boring. Just kidding, it's a great car, I still have it. I had given it to my dad when I moved to DC and now I have it back and Joe drives the Civic every day.
A Civic is so predictable, but a Volvo... that would be luxury, wouldn't it? And safe. And so Robyn. The one I have my eye on is just $40k hahahaahha. Rueful laughter. I'm sure I would be terrified to drive it.
Joe knows all about my Volvo obsession. "Look, there's a Volvo" I said a few weekends ago while we were driving in DC. "That's a Nissan," he said. Ah yes. A few minutes later. "Oh, there's a nice Volvo," I said. "I'm pretty sure that's the same Nissan." Joe shook his head. The logos are pretty similar!
We joked that he was going to have to send an email to all my friends.
"Listen, Adele is going to tell you all about her new Volvo. You know and I know it is a Nissan, but can you just not point that out to her? This is really saving us a lot of money. Thanks, Joe."
